The challenge of creating a fantastic photograph is what interests me; the feeling of elation I get at the end of the planning and shooting process. Also the opportunity to create an image that is not only thought-provoking but a visually stimulating, aesthetically pleasing art piece that individuals will remember for years to come.
When did you realise you wanted to become a photographer?
Approximately 3 years ago when i realized how passionate I became when I had a camera in my hand. I was hooked so to speak. I haven't stopped since then.
In your opinion, is photography more of an art or science?
It is difficult to categorize photography simply as an art or a science. I believe it is an amalgamation of the two. There is a lot of science as well as art involved in photography. For instance, when it comes to lighting a scene, one has to draw on the rudimentariness of physics (knowing how the distance of a light source from the subject, power of light etc, will impact the final image). With the increasing complexity of modern cameras one should have at least a basic knowledge of the internal and external components of the camera in order to maximize the abilities of their camera.Added to this, one must have an artistic vision, all tech and no soul makes for a very boring photograph.
Do you think photography is really accepted as an art in Barbados?
I believe with the proliferation of fashion shows, magazines, pageants and mainly social networks, photography is quickly becoming an accepted art in Barbados. In the last few years, especially, I have realized that many people have realized the importance of a professional looking Facebook profile picture or for the not so technologically inclined, the importance of having at least a couple professional pictures.
How many photos roughly would you say you have taken in your career?
In my short career span, I can say i have easily taken in excess of 10,000 pictures and this number is rapidly increasing with every shoot that I do. In one shoot alone, i can take in as little 20 frames to in excess of 300. Triple or quadruple this for weddings.
Did you study photography professionally? If yes, where?
No I did not study photography professionally, believe it or not. Funny enough, I have a degree is in Ecology from the UWI, go figure. However, i digest many photography books, visit a lot of blogs and study the work of several professional and influential photographers such as Steven Miesel, to name a few. I have also enrolled in a number of photographic courses with professional photographers Stephen Mendes and Joel Brooks. They have been integral in my growth as a photographer along with critique from the public and fellow photographers.
What type of photography do you prefer to practise?
My main interest is fashion photography,
What is your favourite subject?
People. I find people absolutely fascinating - the different personalities, styles etc. and how the camera captures them.
Do you retouch your photos?
I would not say retouch, I prefer to use the word enhance, my images.
How do you feel about this practise in the fashion industry especially and do you see how it can impact young impressionable girls?
I believe it is a necessary part of the fashion industry, people looking their best. However, this must be done within reason. I believe that print media, media on a whole, has a responsibility. After constant visual bombardment, eventually impressionable people begin to believe and accept what they are seeing as reality and consequently mimic these images. There should be some balance. This, however requires an effort by all persons involved in media.
What one thing (object) is more important to you than your camera?
My Ipad
Name one person or place you would love to shoot before you die and why.
Angelina Jolie, I love her spirit, her eyes, lips and her spirit. They are captivating.
What or whom inspires the majority of your work?
It is difficult to pin my inspiration down to one subject. Above all I would have to say influential, thought-provoking photographers such as Steven Miesel and Ansel Adams who were not afraid to think outside of the box irrespective of societal norms. Their images are strong, vivid and timeless.
Where would you like to see your work displayed in the future?
Fine art exhibition, Fashion magazines, Billboards
