Top 10 Fashion Don’ts for 2011

Fashion is an ever evolving art that is continuously inspired by history and changing cultures. Look in any recent issue of Vogue or Baazar and I’m sure you’ll find trends that remind you of some specific era whether it is a 90s inspired grunge look or a Victorian inspired dress – you will find that fashion is truly a cycle, with styles that repeat themselves almost every year. Unfortunately accompanying these fashion do’s are the (apparently, not so obvious) fashion don’ts. In this feature we’ll take a look at some of the most common and recurrent fashion faux pas that we noticed in 2010.
1. Visible Underwear
There is a reason why it’s called “under” wear and we’re not too certain that many people take that to heart when styling their outfits. Too often do we notice matching bras showing full cleavage or cracks and strings when someone bends/sits down. The same rule applies for men. Visible underwear is not attractive and it definitely sends the wrong message.
2. Oversized or Undersized Clothing
Contrary to popular belief, too big is not a fit and wearing clothing that is oversized will make you look just that. Stay away from t-shirts, and sweaters that swallow you. On the opposite end of the pole, dryer- shrunken looking apparel is attention-grabbing but we’re not really sure if for the right reasons. Noticeable body fat piercing through clothing or busts bursting out of button-ups is usually a hint that your clothes are too small. Buy sizes that fit and suit your body shape and structure.
3. More than one pattern
There’s nothing wrong with experimenting with colours but patterns are something you should be more than careful with. Mixing stripes with polka dots or two different prints together makes for a bad fashion cocktail. If you’re going to be bold with a pattern, use complimentary colours to bring the best out of your outfit.
4. Mixing animal print
Ok so you’re a pet lover… we don’t need to see that being reflected in your clothes. Zebra prints and leopard shoes do not mix or match and it really doesn’t matter if they were the same colour so stay away from this awful trend. Similarly as we mentioned with patterns, use a colour that pumps up your print rather than make you look like a walking animal rights advocate.
5. Too much bling
Chunky jewellery, loud necklaces and rings help to make up some of the hottest accessories on the market but there is a way to do it modestly so much as to avoid looking like a Christmas tree full of ornaments. If you’re going wear a loud necklace tame it down by wearing small studded earrings are leave your ears bare. If you’re going to wear long loud decorative earrings forget the necklace. Be bold with your chunky rings but just don’t let your hands get overcrowded.
6. Leggings as pants
This is one trend we hope never to see again but unfortunately as fate would have it, this dreadful fashion diaster still walks among us. Leggings should be worn with long tunic blouses or short dresses, there are not tights and you are certainly not going to the gym when you step out in your heels and leggings baring camel toe. After reading this, I hope you stay away from this dreadful mistake and don’t leave all exposed for the world to see.
7. Worn-down heels
You look stunning, your hair is done, your outfit fits you to a T and you’re ready to hop out in fine style but then “clit-clot-clit-clot!” . If there is one thing that absolutely makes anyone’s skin walk it’s the annoying sound of worn down heels. It only costs about $7 to have your pair reheeled and if they can’t be fixed, they’ve lived beyond their lifespan now please put them to rest.
8. Denim on denim
There was once an article posted somewhere saying that this awful trend was known as the Texas Tuxedo, however, it is far from being formal wear, in fact we don’t think it should be any kind of wear at all. Denim on denim makes you look rugged and less feminine, unless of course, if you’re going to wear denim shorts and a more flattering version of a denim jacket. However, we still don’t recommend double denim combinations and suggest wearing these pieces as separates so they can stand out.
9. Swagga-jacking
One of the biggest fashion crimes a woman can be guilty of is “swagga-jacking”, that is when you make a carbon copy of someone else’s personal style. Ladies, be original, experiment with outfits and hairstyles that best suit your own personality rather than trying to imitate some celebrity. We all love Nicki, Rihanna and Gaga but promise me from now on, no inverted bobs with dyed ends, no more Kool-aid red hair and absolutely no more leotards in the club.
10. Trend overload
When it comes to fashion we should always remember that everything should be done in moderation. Do experiment with new styles, textures and prints but please not all at once. If your going to wear something make a confident statement with your clothes rather than make it look like you were unsure of what you were doing. If you’re going a be savy, be savy. If you’re going for girl next door with a flannel shirt and shorts leave the trashy torn up leggings and boots at home!

A lot of women think that an outfit is made by those pricey or not so pricey pumps and that banging dress but what really sets one apart from another is the accessories that the wearer chooses to add to their look. Yes, an accessory something as small as a ring, the right earrings, a chain those things are the actual prize possessions of the style elite, it usually isn't the actual attire entirely that creates the magic that you see, it is that one final piece to the puzzle.
Every woman should have a bunch of rings in her jewelry box, and not those simple gold or silver ones but rings with character, those with meaning and those with eye catching detailing, maybe even a giant ruby or turquoise stone suspended from the clutches of the metal. It is a touch that adds so much to the most simple of outfits, it gives the onlooker a sense of mystery about your being, almost like a question of what that piece means to you and this in turn creates such a beauty in your final look, so think about it, why don't you?
Onto another overshadowed piece, the necklace or chain, the right one could elevate your outfit beyond the horizons of all others, even if the same dress is within your horizon at the same party, with the right accessories, there would be no need to feel like you have to compete against the next person since you already know, everything about your puzzle is unique, well maybe except that dress. In this age in fashion, anything goes, feathers, rope, old school chains, spikes even safety pins bonded together can make a statement when done the right way.
Now with all that said, you can think about your next purchase and let it be something a little more unique and meaningful, something that will definitely set you apart and make you feel like you have finally finished that puzzle that you never thought you could get completed, its amazing what the right accessory can do.
